We have an old Sony TV pre-HDMI but does have component video. We were trying to link a Amazon Firestick lite to the component video connections. The problem appears to be that the TV only accepts 1080i and not 1080p this device only converts to 1080p 50hz and 60 hz but apparently doesn't include 1080i. I'm not an expert and I may have messed up my "i's and p's" but anyway. The Firestick only has outputs in 480, 1080 and not 720. Anyway, the best we could get between the limtations of the Firestick, TV, and this device was 480. The TV has an enhanced setting which helps a bit but the resolution is still not as good as our other more modern setup. I guess that's part of the difficulty of using a 20 year old TV. Just make sure that you will have all the frequency conversions you need for what you are trying to do.

I have an older 1080i plasma TV that does not have any HDMI ports, as I wanted to hook an Apple TV up to it. This is one of the few converters that I've tried that actually worked! The key seems to be having a "resolution" button. This one does not work with 1080i, but it did work under 720. The screen did get cut off a little bit when it was on that resolution but that wasn't a huge deal. I returned this one because when I compared it to another unit I had purchased that maxed out at 720, the other one had a slightly better picture. The other unit used cables I provided which were high quality so that may have been the difference? This one does have built in cables, which is nice unless it's the reason for the quality difference. -Jen

Fixed my problem while retaining 1080p

I have a standard def DVR, running into a 1080p upconverter, then to an HDTV. --Looks the same as the Direct TV 1080 when I switch back and forth. Problem is, my 2012 TV started to get ''hdmi blink''--(black screen for 2 seconds), a problem with hdmi sometimes, cables won't fix it, rerouting wires, switching plug polarity etc ... the hdmi circuit in the TV is just glitchy etc. My 'component in' on the TV supports 1080p and you can't tell the difference from the HDMI 1080p. PROBLEM IS, my 1080p upconverter only has an HDMI output. So I bought this hdmi to component converter so the signal can get upconveted by my upconverter, then converted to 'component cables'' by this unit. It is running 1080p on the TV and looks as good as the HDMI1080p, but w/out the stupid hdmi blink. BTW, this converter works even when the power supply is not plugged in---it is getting power from the hdmi cable which is connected to my 1080upconverter. But to insure I don't overload that unit's power supply, I went ahead and plugged this into it's own power source. This unit came by standard shipping and arrived a few days quicker than the initial estimated time.

Well I bought this because I have one of the first type of hi def TVs back when they were still using the picture tube type and without an hdmi hook up just the component plugs so the tv at the time was hi end but that was then the tv is now in my finished room in the basement but hasn’t really been used much since my son moved out about 6 years ago and since then hasn’t been used not even a cable box hook anymore so I got the news that my grandson was going to be staying with me for a couple of months and is a big Xbox
player so I saw this device and figured I would give it a shot mainly to get him a good spot where he could do his thing with playing on wi fi and not disturbing everyone else in the house so it took a little work and got it to the 720 p rate which is ok not like 4K but useable and for twenty dollars if he gets two months out of it I will be happy, and basically it is just hooked up to his Xbox !!

A quick fix for under $20

We have a 14 year-old Sony Bravia system. The two HDMI ports blew out in a recent thunderstorm. We have purchased a 2100 Joule surge protector to replace the ineffective 600 Joule unit that was on the system. Oops.

Rather than replace the TV, we decided to try a couple different brands of HDMI to composite converters. This model worked straight out of the box for the Spectrum cable input. No USB power connection was needed. It was a different story with the Roku box. Without power it didn't work at all - no image and a high-pitched whine. With USB power added, the whine went away, but still no picture. To get a signal we had to reset the Roku box. This required completely rebuilding the Roku account, which was a bit time-consuming. But it worked. Resolution went from 1080P with the HDMI input to 720P, but that seems to be a function of the composite video inputs, which don't support 1080P. The bottom line - it works, and was a quick fix for under $20.

Doesn't Work for Me

All HDMI ports on my Panasonic plasma are shot, so it's composite or nothing. I tried different devices through the Linkfor (AV receiver, Roku) but couldn't get resolution above 480 / 4:3 aspect ratio. Repeatedly pushing the unit's resolution button produces several black screens and 480 (with chopped off horizontal). This is odd since the instructions say 720 is the default resolution, which is all I wanted. The instructions also warn against HDMI above 1.4, making it an obsolete item. Although it does come with a USB power connector, there is no AC plug with it--one of mine worked with it and another did not. Anyway, it was nicely packed. Given the reviews here, it seems as if buying this is a gamble--you may get one that works right, you may not.

I was skeptical about buying this after reading a few negative reviews but this 100% works. My daughter was gifted a small HD TV from her Grandparents, which was around 10-15 years old. She, is constantly playing on her Nintendo Switch, so I bought this adapter, to see if it would work with the Switch. It worked straight out of the box, I used an old phone charger adapter to power it, as my TV had no USB port. I made sure the TV settings on the Switch were set to automatic, plugged it all in and it worked straight away. It's not 4k quality but neither is it a 4k TV. It also worked when I tried a Firestick. I have not tried anything else on it yet.
