Shadowcroft Academy for Dungeons: Year Two Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Build a dungeon. Slay heroes. Survive finals.
After narrowly surviving his first year at Shadowcroft Academy for Dungeons, Logan Murray - army vet turned fungaloid - thought the hardest and weirdest days of his life were finally behind him.
Logan has never been that lucky.
Students are being killed, more so than usual, and no one is quite sure why. Logan and the Terrible Twelfth suspect it has something to do with Arborea’s secretive past. Worse, solving the mystery is only one of Logan’s many problems. His cultivation has stalled, Prince Chadrigoth is trying to murder him, and he’s got a lineup of new and challenging classes, like "Best Friends Forever: Your Minions and You" and "Offensive Dungeon Design: When the Best Defense Is Preemptive Murder".
Logan didn’t survive his first year by giving up when the going got tough, and he has no intention of rolling over this time around. All he needs to do is level up his core, advance to his next monstrous evolution, unravel a mystery as old as the school itself, and put the smackdown on a demonic bully with murder on his mind. You know, just another ordinary year at good ol’ Shadowcroft.

It is absurd in that the main character plays a Mushroom Dude who arguably wins over people by his persistence... he just grows on you. And like a fungus, he keeps on growing on you. That's where the heart of this book is. In a lot of ways it plays with neat magic systems, cool funny character interactions, puns (of course), and finally - a main character and set of side characters that really care about each other and grow with the story.
It isn't just fungal growth either, there's a lot of rich character growth and a feeling that what happened in the early parts of the book really matter at the end. And while the story seems "too weird to be good" it'll amaze you when you finish it off and you realize you loved a story about a Mushroom Dungeon Dude.
Give it a try, it really does stand out in the Dungeon Core space by having a certain irreverence to it that borders on the absurd... and makes it work. It takes chances, giant leaps... and it lands them. I think it's worth picking up book 1 and enjoying the start, and seeing this great book 2 that really manages to continue what I expect to be a super fun series.
Can't wait for the next one!
This was a story that failed to be a true follow-up to the original. We got almost no classroom work, or practice. Instead there was a half baked murder mystery with the heroes just not having the right temperament or build up to make it work.
It was a definite disappointment for me.
The cohesion of the story wasn’t as good as the first book. The main “mystery” plot lines were confused and there were logic jumps that I just didn’t follow. The slight twist for the bad guy at the end was good.
