I like that is was throttled back a little from the last book, still a wild ride! Enjoyed the character development but still feel the battles are unnecessarily tedious. Also, really would enjoy more storyline: e.g. back story/history/world building. Doesnโ€™t have to deviate greatly from the local aesthetic, the Dark Khans is an excellent example. Loved that aspect and others like the mysterious tower quest to the south (book1), etc. staring the next book in the series!

3.0 out of 5 starsIt's got a lot going on . . .
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on June 28, 2020
SO, one thing I like about this series, its in regards to the structure of the story? is how the author actually has "Boxes" appear in the book, for item descriptions, & weapons, and armor, that's a nice touch!

I continue to like the world building. It's one of the better things about the story. The author really has quite the imagination.

Also on one hand, I like how the author moves things along, but I would prefer to go at 25 mph, as opposed to the 750 mph he's going!? Like on the one hand I understand with a group of people, things are going to go faster building up a city, on another, I'm thinking to myself, WHY DID HE NOT LEVEL UP MORE? Before jumping into the deep end of the pool?! This is why he's died so many times already.

I also think this thought a lot "Why is Richter gawking at his comrades getting eaten or mauled, or beat up, insert adjective here!?" He's done realized its not a game? Is he secretly ya masochist? The book already answers this, when he lost a precious member of his body. He's not, so whats with the gawking???

Like seriously, every time. EVERY TIME.. Richter gets his but kicked, quite painfully I might add, and his team mates get their butts kicked... Except for Scion, he seems to come out relatively okay most of time.
And what bugs me more, is for a "gamer" Richter is sure slow on the ball when it comes to combat. The guy sure can't think on his feat, UNTIL AFTER THE FACT. And its too late then!!!

Also, whats up with him and his pet dragon? Like why did he start calling her "Love".. she has a name, its "Alma" so, I found this to be weirdly creepy.. Because it wasn't "doting" really.. it just seemed out of place. Weird for the context. I dote on my dog.. so I'm pro level when it comes to treating a pet like family.

Anyways, I continue to read this story, a lot for the world building, because I think that's the most interesting character at this point.

The Main MC Richter, if he wasn't a dummy, & utilized his powers correctly, the story would be a lot more interesting. But apparently, hes only thinking about T&A, I don't blame him there. But he's sucking at the rest of the things that make a "Whole character"..

Also the author, until book four was really good about following up on, story lines in the book, before this one.. Like the last thing he was doing in book 3, before the whole deal with some assassin was hunting for the nest of these "Hell bugs" or something another. And He just totally goes off and forgets about Yoshi and that story line..

How do I put this, I feel like the author is getting caught up like game devs, in "Feature creep".. like theirs SOOOOO MUCH going on. It's a cluster cluck if there ever was one.

TL:DR I continue to read on. I hope the story & characters will grow on me a bit more. Maybe gain a little more depth?

This book was better than the last. It got back to being more about the village and Richterโ€™s responsibilities than a long dungeon slog. The pacing was good. The growth of secondary characters was cool.

My only complaint with this author is the cliche view of women. There is not one real female character in the whole series that isnโ€™t a shallow stereotype, damsel in distress, sexy temptress, etcโ€ฆ The cranky old healer is the closest female character to interesting. The female sex jokes also got old. I totally expected a โ€œthatโ€™s what she saidโ€ joke at any moment.

Other than that though.

GNOMES RULE!

It took a while, honestly I didnโ€™t know if Iโ€™d like this series, or even author! But I love the slow build-up and seeing how Ricter grows!

Canโ€™t wait to read the next book! I also enjoy how long these books are and not such a quick read! I love pinger books and itโ€™s wonderful!

Good book that continues the story of the MC and the author does a good job Iโ€™d keeping his power level and abilities in check. My one complaint is naming a book after the Catacombs and then spending no time there. What happened to โ€œyour words have meaning?โ€

5.0 out of 5 stars Very engaging and entertaining writing

If you like to read fantasy, fiction or into gaming, this series is for you. His writing meshes personalities and attributes into an entertaining story that will run for years. To someone that doesn't game the status updates may start to get old volume after volume but not so much that you ignore them. Maybe just start to read through them quicker than normal. They do add to the feel of LitRPG.
A friend suggested his books by sending me volume 1 Founding in paperback. While he reads ebooks he knows I still prefer paper. After reading it I bought the next two volumes. I would have bought more but they became harder to find printed and vastly more expensive. I've paid less for good hard back books. Looks like I'll have to convert to the much cheaper ebooks one day, but not yet.
So not finding them or willing to pay $60 through Amazon I went to my favorite book store while visiting family three states away. They're huge and have everything, except Aleron Kong. Found out they have to be ordered, printed and shipped per order. Since I wasn't going to be around to pick them up I slowed my reading of the two I had and watched for them on Amazon. Eventually I've bought through volume six. Even though I'm investing a small fortune in printed copies I'll continue buying them to have a collection on my shelf of a great series.
I've actually slowed down my reading so I don't get too far ahead of Kong's writing them. Instead of enjoying big sections of a book in a sitting like I did with the first few books I now read a chapter or two and put it down. I hope this keeps the story fresh in my mind while waiting for the next book to be published.

But as a particular incestuous German philosopher once said, "That which does not kill you, makes you stronger."
A bit of wisdom that is figuratively true, as in a literal sense, that which does not kill us often leaves us maimed and scarred. Fortunately maiming and scarring are more easily reversed when magic healing is applied.

This is the fourth installment of "The Land" series, a LitRPG series of high fantasy and great detail. The series may be of interest to fans of the Dungeon Core subgenre with its city building aspects. Additionally those who enjoy playing RPGs may find this, and the three preceding novels, to be entertaining reads.

This latest installment makes this one of the most consistently well-written, genuinely interesting and fun series in the litrpg genre. I hear some complaints the title is misleading or that it ends too soon or that it's too much of this or that, but in reality it's all of the things we've been asking for... and if it leaves us wanting more, the same was true of books 1, 2, and 3 and all signs point to it continuing to be true for books 5, and on. There are some great hunts, quests and battle scenes in this book. There are some truly disturbing references to the Dark Arts. There is village-building. There is great character development (Krom, Beyan, Hafiz's sons, ...). There's introduction of great back-story (the Dark Khans). There's Richter doing what's necessary, growing as a leader, taking on more responsibility. There's fasinating magic (Blood Magic, esp.). There's humor (the Hood). There's Richter struggling to prepare for what's coming, good and bad things from all directions. Aleron Kong has done a great job with this series so far, balancing growth and maintaining dramatic tension. He's made the readers care about the characters, the village, the nemeses. It's a great setting with a lot of potential and I'm really looking forward to whole books on just little corners of it (The Catacombs, the Serrated Mountains, the Plains of Gold Plains, some of the ancient and timeworn dungeons on Richter's Map, the big stuff and small stuff that we're leading up to), as well as seeing the main characters grow and develop (Alma, Krom, ...). This is a great series, with a great author and an amazing fan base. Highly recommended.
