How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donโ€™t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 starsA fun romp without much substance, needs better editing. My first experience with LitRPG. (Spoilers)
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on August 16, 2020
I would say the best thing about this book is how easy it is to read. Unfortunately, that's also its biggest downfall. There's not a whole lot of substance to it. And I didn't know that the story would have explicit and constant use of roleplaying game mechanics. As a tabletop gamer, I had surprisingly mixed feelings about this. It kinda makes it hard to take the story seriously when there's constant references to experience, inventory slots, the MC actually looking at his own health and mana bar, etc. It's a bit strange. But if you're into LitRPG I'm sure this is exactly what you're looking for. The MC was also very overpowered, especially one particular spell he gets later on. The level system didn't seem to mean much in comparison to the MC - at one point he faces a character that's 10 levels higher than him, but he manages to kill him almost instantly with one spell (the aforementioned overpowered spell). It kinda reminded me of Dragon Ball Z with power levels.

The MC having casual sex with dwarf women was pretty funny - kinda reminded me of a sort of D&D James Bond. But again makes it hard to take the story seriously. So when the more dramatic parts of the story came up near the end of the book, they didn't have much impact. I would say I enjoyed the first quarter of the book the most, before all the dwarven stuff, which ended up being basically the entire story. I figured the MC would go on a journey through many different kinds of places, but it almost entirely revolved around this dwarven kingdom which was a bit of a letdown.

There's also a fair amount of errors that made it past proofing, as others have mentioned.

To be honest I'm a bit surprised by all the five star reviews, but I did read through the whole thing, it's easy to read, and certainly "fun" so it's not that bad. I would recommend it to WoW/Tabletop addicts age 25 or under.

Leave aside the few grammatical mistakes (โ€œlayโ€ instead of โ€œlie,โ€ โ€œfurtherโ€ instead of โ€œfarther,โ€ and others the editor should have found), and you have the makings of a long and interesting saga.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story

Enjoyable and fun story that really grabs you and gives you that โ€œJust one more pageโ€ feeling that has you surprised to find that itโ€™s suddenly much later at night than you thought!

I thought it was a little rough at the start and I almost stopped reading it, as I felt a disconnect for the main character: heโ€™s supposedly a very experienced soldier but doesnโ€™t act like it. His tactics and approach in combat and his apparent lack of expertise in unarmed and melee combatโ€ฆ ie the fight vs wolf and orc scout.

Stick with it though after a few chapters I quickly got sucked in and had a great time. Very interesting world and characters!

I liked it. It's a perfect combination of action and comedy with the occasional WTF moments . Let's see how part 2 is next

I very much enjoyed this book. It has very likeable characters and moved along at a good pace with plenty of humor and battles. I now want a Yoda cookie jar.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book, good storyline, the main MC not so bright.

I like the story of this book thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m giving it a four. I donโ€™t think the MC who is supposed to be a former Louis in The Marines in his former existence seems to have forgotten all his training and life lessons of the things he was taught. I understand the premise of the book makes him go crazy because of his monster half but that does not make up for all the silly mistakes heโ€™s has made in the book. As Iโ€™ve said before the story is good and thatโ€™s why I will go on to read the next book I hope the MCโ€˜s smarts will improve during the next book. Going on to read it as soon as I post this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stupid names. . .

So I think the MC names things like a kid, & has a penchant for female dwarves & doesn't think as much as he should before he acts. But its one great story, the author has a pretty good imagination. But things seem to fall in a rut story wise. This book really focuses heavily on the dwarves..

Honestly, I've really enjoyed the story, the characters, the world building, little gripes aside... Not liking how the author kills off named characters though... that pisses me off. IF their going to die, don't bother making me like them.

Impress me with cool & creative, not making me sad b/c someone died. And really if you can't think how to end a relationship, that's no reason to kill off a character.

I was caught off guard on how I ended up enjoying this story. The pacing is pretty quick though. Like... would have liked to see some more character growth before.. whats happened, well, happened. Because its just like "warp speed"
So I guess the author is going to focus somewhere else story wise? maybe the gods? or something? not sure..

Because the author was like "Slam bam, thank you ma'am," on equipping our MC with armor & weapons right out of the gate...it blew my mind, compared to other #Isekai genre books...

I was fond of one thing though. The author seems to think Halberds & Battle axes are a cool thing. That's something I appreciate over the common "sword"..

TL:DR This is one of the better western #Isekai books. Main characters not a celibate saint or a "beta".. Good times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag

I was very excited to read more of Dave's work after reading his other series. These two books don't even seem to be written by the same author. As far as it being classified as LitRPG, it is good as fantasy literature. But the RPG portion falls flat. The main character, Max, has growth and progression is completely off balanced; the reputation gains from dwarves don't negatively affect reputation with their enemies, the orcs? The main character, Max, also fights raid level bosses solo, gains a kingdom before level 20, and is both a melee fighter, archer, healer, and spell damage dealer? Just ridiculous. There needs to be more focus on the stats, more balance in his build, and some sort of limitations for Max I would love to have future books feature the other Battle born characters' development, as it stands, they are.very bland and one dimensional. They have the potential to be so much more. These two could use some rewrites before a third book is released. But as I stated, the fantasy literature part is well done. So, a mixed bag.

Anything by Dave Willmarth I've read has been very well written and unique in its own way. This is no different. I bought it the moment it was released and end up rereading it each time a new release comes out. You can't go wrong reading this.
